The Texas Heartbeat Law is in effect!
Since September 2021, this law has banned abortion after a baby’s heartbeat is detected, around 6 weeks along. The Supreme Court is currently considering arguments over this law, and another Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks along. This is the most promising challenge to Roe V. Wade, which legalized abortion in the U.S. in 1973. The court’s ruling is expected in Summer 2022, although legal maneuvers could suspend the law in the meantime.
What are we seeing at TWC Clinics?
Women are calling us much earlier in their pregnancies with urgency to abort. Many clients who come and a heartbeat are choosing LIFE! However, our clients that do not see a heartbeat in their sonogram at our clinic are leaving even more rushed to abort. We are also seeing local organizations helping women fund their travel and procedures out of state.
What are we doing at TWC?
Our client services team has revamped our telephone talking points to help clients understand this new law and the timeline of pregnancy development. As often as possible, we offer same-day appointments for free sonograms so they can learn more about their options—including parenting and adoption. We provide compassion and engage in spiritual discussions when clients are receptive. We are also working on our Google advertising to reach these clients FIRST.
Our nurses are honing in on their sonogram skills, taking all the time they need to search for that heartbeat.
We are also working to EQUIP FAMILIES who are welcoming babies they didn’t expect. We provide parenting classes, mentors, and community partners who can provide practical resources such as jobs, housing, etc.
We’ve moved many of our parent mentoring sessions online and through phone calls. Our clients have loved the flexibility this offers and seem to feel much more comfortable opening up over the phone. They come in person to “shop” for baby supplies they earn through their sessions.
